Welcome back to the Fearlessly Unshackled Blog! today we dive into a heartfelt conversation with guest Cody Custer, who shares his remarkable journey of faith, loss, and redemption. In our ongoing series called “Faith Conversations,” we explore what it means to lean on God through life's trials and tribulations. From experiencing profound grief to finding purpose in community engagement, Cody’s story is a testament to how God’s grace can work in our lives. If you’ve ever found yourself grappling with doubt or seeking clarity in your faith, you’re not alone. Cody's journey speaks to all of us navigating life’s challenges, and he does so with an authenticity that is both encouraging and uplifting.

The Journey Begins: A Story of Loss

Cody starts by recounting the sorrows of his early life, where loss was a consistent theme. Raised in a Christian family, his world turned upside down when he lost two siblings to a tragic accident. The aftermath left his family reeling, and a rigid religious environment pushed them away from the church for nearly a decade. “I believe that, as a child, God was talking to me,” Cody reflects. “It wasn’t an audible voice, but he was with me in spirit.” This profound connection laid the foundation for his eventual return to faith, despite the ups and downs of life.

Finding Faith Among the Trials

At 14, Cody faced another life-altering moment when his father suffered a severe horse accident. This incidence forced him to grow up quickly, diving into the responsibilities of life while simultaneously pursuing his dream of becoming a rodeo cowboy. During this time, he struggled with partying and reckless behaviors but remained aware of a calling he couldn’t fully articulate.A pivotal moment in Cody’s faith journey occurred in 1984 when he crossed paths with some fellow bull riders who introduced him to a more inviting and inclusive perspective of Jesus. "It was more about relationship than religion,” he explains, underscoring a crucial realization that many have yet to encounter.

Acts of Grace: The Impact of Friendship

Winning his first world title in the ‘90s brought joy and recognition, yet Cody's journey was not without heartache. The tragic death of his friend Jeff in a rodeo accident became a turning point that deepened his faith. Reflecting on this loss, he shares, “We may not understand it all, but that moment shaped my perspective on life and faith.”Cody attributes his resilience not only to his personal faith but to the bonds he forged with others. Every encounter, no matter how brief, can potentially alter the course of someone’s life—a powerful reminder of the significance of our everyday interactions.

Embracing Vulnerability: Life After Loss

Yet, life continued to throw curveballs. In 2011, Cody faced the most devastating loss of all—the tragic death of his son, Aaron, in a car accident. He grapples with this grief openly, demonstrating how his faith anchored him in his darkest hours. “During my greatest time of grief, I encountered the most vibrant sense of God’s presence,” he notes. As Cody processed this immense pain, he couldn't help but question God’s plan. Yet, through that questioning, he learned to lean into his relationship with God, allowing himself to grieve while finding solace in the assurance of eternal life and connection with Aaron.

The Importance of Presence Over Pretense

Today, Cody is not only a former bull riding champion but also a mentor for young rodeo athletes. He emphasizes that his primary goal is not to push a religious agenda but to authentically connect with others through compassion and love. He shares, “I want to bring peace to the table,” recognizing that true influence comes from genuine relationships rather than judgment or pressure. His insight into his role as a friend—a listener, a comforter, and, sometimes, a tough love advisor—resonates deeply. In a time when many feel isolated or misunderstood, Cody’s message is powerful: “We’re not all called to be preachers; we’re just meant to love others well.”

A Legacy of Love

As our conversation draws to a close, Cody leaves us with timeless wisdom about life, loss, and faith. The central theme of his life story is that our purpose extends beyond our achievements; it resides within the relationships we cultivate and the love we share.“Be sensitive to where you’re at,” he advises. “No one’s perfect, and we all stumble, but we keep coming back.” This unwavering commitment to compassion and connection speaks to the heart of what it means to walk in faith.
