On December 9, 2024, Fearlessly Unshackled host Sarah Rose had a heartfelt conversation with Chris and Jerry, founders of Running the Race Horse Ranch in Fairfax, Iowa. Their journey is one filled with faith, redemption, and a passion for helping troubled kids through horse therapy. The ranch, originally a cattle barn, has transformed into a sanctuary for healing and hope.

Faith in Action

Chris shared that their journey began 23 years ago when they moved to the family farm. Despite trying various ways to utilize the property for horse training and lessons, nothing felt right. It was only after a heartfelt prayer asking God for guidance that Chris received a clear vision: they were meant to help troubled children through equine therapy. This divine direction not only reshaped their purpose but also aligned Chris, a lifelong horse lover, with Jerry, who serves as a pastor.

Their love for horses and commitment to helping others merged beautifully into a mission. For over 15 years, they have facilitated horse therapy for kids facing immense challenges—those who’ve endured human trafficking, abuse, and neglect. Chris explained, “It just started as a vision from God and has grown into something beautiful.” Jerry, who himself came from a troubled past, noted that his experiences allow him to connect deeply with these kids, providing empathy and understanding.

Healing Through Horses

The therapy sessions take place on the ranch, where horses provide a nurturing presence. These animals become a source of unconditional love for children who often feel unloved or unwanted. Activities such as grooming the horses help instill a sense of purpose and responsibility. Jerry recounted an unforgettable moment when a little boy brushed a horse and the animal responded by wrapping its neck around him, creating a connection that left everyone in tears.

The work is tough and emotionally heavy. Both Chris and Jerry describe moments of doubt, wondering if they were adequately fulfilling God’s purpose. However, the rewards—like witnessing a child’s smile or a breakthrough in their emotional well-being—reinforce their commitment. Their mission isn’t solely about the activities but also about creating a safe space for children to heal and learn they are valued.

The Power of Forgiveness
One of the most profound aspects of their conversation included Jerry’s testimony of forgiveness. Having experienced abuse as a child, he didn't want other kids to feel the same pain he endured. He emphasizes that no child should carry the burden of guilt for things beyond their control. Jerry shared the transformative power of forgiveness, explaining how he faced his abusers and was able to extend love and mercy, allowing healing to permeate his heart and life.
Chris echoed this sentiment, revealing that their work isn’t only about helping the children; it’s a personal journey for them both. They aim to sow seeds of hope through faith, showing these young souls that despite their past, they are worthy of love and a bright future.

 A Call to Action
As they build upon their mission, both Chris and Jerry expressed a need for resources to continue their work. They shared their hopes for a more permanent structure where children could stay for extended periods, helping to build deeper relationships and provide more intensive support. The ranch operates on donations and the two work multiple jobs to sustain it, showcasing their dedication to the cause.
For those inspired to help, Chris and Jerry welcome donations via their website, Running the Race Horse Ranch. Funds will support the operations, including the care of the horses and necessary supplies, to ensure they can keep providing this critical service to children in need.

Closing Thoughts
The conversation with Chris and Jerry underscores the beauty of faith in action. Their journey invites us all to reflect on how we can contribute to our communities and help those who are suffering. By embracing hope, healing, and unwavering determination, Chris and Jerry are not only changing the lives of children but are also a testament to the power of forgiveness and love.
