Embracing Faith: A Conversation with John Anderson

On March 8, 2025, I had the opportunity to sit down with Jon Anderson, a passionate horse trainer and coach whose journey has been marked by a relationship with God. Our faith conversation took on many forms, but it was John’s authenticity and humility that truly resonated throughout our discussion.

From Rodeo to Revelation

Jon’s story begins in the small town of Minneota Minnesota, where he grew up helping his grandpa on a hobby farm. With a childhood filled with horses and the rodeo lifestyle, he naturally developed a deep connection to these majestic animals. While studying at South Dakota State University, he found himself venturing into the rodeo scene, and it was here that a fateful introduction to Gary Gabrielson—his horse trainer and mentor—would unlock doors to immense life lessons. Gary became more than just a horse trainer to John; he was a pivotal figure who imparted wisdom that extended far beyond horse handling. John shared, “I thought I was learning about horses, but I was actually learning about life.” His experience in working with horses fostered a unique dialogue with God, one where John felt His presence most profoundly.

The Power of Community

An essential theme that emerged was the significant influence of community on Jon’s spiritual journey. His career at RALCO Nutrition was not just a job; it introduced him to a group of faith-driven individuals who modeled genuine faith in action. These relationships played a vital role in shaping Jon’s understanding of what it means to truly live out one’s faith. It was during these formative years that John realized that living with purpose, joy, and peace is contagious. Surrounded by caring individuals, John not only began to explore his faith but also became a beacon of hope for others. “When you see others flourish in faith, it stirs a desire within you,” he explained.

Trials and Transformation

Like many entrepreneurs, Jon faced significant challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic when his coaching business came to an unexpected halt. At a time when many would feel overwhelmed and uncertain, Jon turned to God, leaning completely into his faith for guidance. “I spent 2024 on my knees, praying and asking for God’s grace,” he recounted. What could have been a period of despair turned into a profound spiritual awakening and transformation. “God always provided,” Jon remarked, illustrating how, despite the struggles, his reliance on faith deepened his connection to God. Even in moments of doubt and difficulty, he learned to find joy in the trials, aligning with the biblical principle from James 1:2-5, which encourages believers to see trouble as an opportunity for growth.

A Horse’s Lesson

One of the most poignant lessons John shared was the parallel between training horses and deepening one’s faith. “You can’t train a horse if it doesn’t move,” he reflected. In the same way, we need to take the first step towards God—whether that means reaching out in prayer, seeking community, or stepping out of our comfort zones.“It’s a journey,” John said. “And sometimes we resist. But when we stop resisting and allow God to work, that’s when the magic happens.”

Taking Steps Forward

As we closed our conversation, John emphasized the importance of listening and being present to God's voice amid life’s chaos. He reminded us that faith is not a series of checkboxes but a relationship characterized by openness and a willingness to grow. “Just take that step,” he encouraged. “Trust Him, and watch Him work.”His story serves as a reminder that, regardless of our backgrounds or current struggles, there’s power in faith, and God orchestrates each of our journeys. For anyone looking to connect with Jon and learn more about his coaching journey, you can find him on link to Cowboy Coach.

Closing in Prayer

In Jon’s own words, let us carry this attitude into our weeks ahead:“Heavenly Father, thank you for the grace and guidance you provide. Open our eyes and ears, and help us seek you in everything we do. May we lean into our faith and trust in you, knowing that you will always provide for us. Amen.”
