The Fearlessly Unshackled Faith Conversation:  host Sarah Rose sits down with former NFL player and current NFL agent, Zack Zenner. The warmth and connection between Sarah and Zack are immediately evident as they reflect on their shared experiences and the power of faith in shaping their lives.

The Importance of Faith in Life and Sports

Zack starts the conversation by expressing gratitude for the impact that faith-driven initiatives had on young players during his time at South Dakota State University. With notable figures like Coach Stig and T.J. Carlson fostering an environment where faith could flourish, Zack witnessed firsthand the tremendous influence that athletes can have on the next generation. As they mentor young players, they offer more than just athletic guidance—they provide a sense of spiritual grounding that can last a lifetime. "We want them to inspire you through your faith," Zack says, echoing the sentiment that athletes have a unique platform to share their beliefs and values.

A Personal Journey of Faith

Zack recounts his upbringing in a Catholic home in the Twin Cities, where he attended church regularly. Despite this foundation, it wasn't until college that he truly engaged with his faith. During his redshirt year at South Dakota State, he met a friend who invited him to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). This invitation turned out to be pivotal; it opened the door for Zack to explore his relationship with God in a deeper, more personal way. He emphasizes, "What I found was something really unique. It was people my age that were strong in their faith." This community not only educated him in biblical teachings but also demonstrated how to practice faith authentically in sports. Over time, he became more involved—attending various gatherings and even hosting Bible studies for his teammates during his NFL career.

God's Guidance in Career Choices

As the conversation shifts toward Zack's career journey, he shares a critical turning point that involved significant personal reflection. After five seasons in the NFL, Zack initially planned to attend medical school but received a distinct message that he should pursue a different path. Despite the extensive work he’d done to prepare for medical school, he chose to trust that divine guidance had a greater purpose for his life. Reflecting on this decision, Zack explains, "It started coming in, and after just kind of thinking about it, meditating and praying, I knew in my spirit that I needed to go a different direction." Instead of continuing on that medical path, he pursued a master's degree in nutrition and transitioned into becoming an NFL agent, where he could combine his passions for mentorship, health, and football.

Finding Purpose Beyond a Game

Zack’s journey reveals how life’s setbacks can lead to unexpected and fruitful paths. In 2019, he encountered challenges that limited his ability to play football, which forced him into a phase of self-discovery. "If I had played out the 2019 season," he reflects, "I would have moved into real estate and become a landlord, but God had something else in mind." It's a reminder that the struggles we face can lead to the greatest growth. Zack now finds fulfillment in helping others optimize their health through coaching and mentoring, fulfilling the deeper desire to make a positive impact on people's lives.

A Message to the Next Generation

One of the most poignant moments in their discussion comes when Zack offers advice to young athletes: "Ask God for guidance. You might not get a word like I did, but you might feel peace or discomfort. Knowing that spirit is so important." His emphasis on being open to different paths resonates with anyone navigating the uncertainties of youth.
